HUI Ka-hung
Bamboo and Papercrafts Master

Hui Ka-hung (許嘉雄) is a Shau Kei Wan master of bamboo and paper crafts and the owner of Hung C Lau, a workshop specialising in lions, dragons and all manner of ligation arts. He made his first lion at seven and entered a formal apprenticeship as a paper craftsman at thirteen. With his apprentices, his family and the wider community of his neighbourhood, he made Dai Gum Loong, the longest golden parade dragon in the world, at 125 metres. Awakened in 2019 and covered in about 7,000 handmade scales, this Hong Kong-made dragon is now the centrepiece of Bendigo, in Victoria, Australia, where he is the basis of the city’s tourism economy and civic identity. Dai Gum Loong demonstrates Hong Kong’s uninterrupted line of traditional craftsmanship, and what can be achieved through international cooperation and the sharing of heritage. He was the beginning of many landmark projects, and of a large-scale reawakening of awareness of Hong Kong’s cultural identity in China and around the world. Master Hui will lead this lantern-making workshop.
