Tying Hong Kong to the World:
Dragons, Lions, Lanterns and a Craft that Unifies the Chinese World

Join us for a fun, hands-on lantern-making workshop, where we celebrate the traditional craft of making fire dragons!

This workshop places the art of paper and bamboo tying within the wider context of Hong Kong’s role as a cultural hub. By making a lantern, participants get hands-on experience of folk tradition that has helped strengthen the link between the global Chinese world and Hong Kong through community, craft, and cross-cultural exchange.

This workshop is part of a larger project that traces Hong Kong’s role as a cultural hub from the late nineteenth century to the present by focusing on ligation arts, the manufacture and export of Chinese devotional objects, and parading dragons around the world. As we build lanterns, we will examine how these crafts travelled with, and helped sustain, connections across the global Chinese diaspora. We will also consider how this heritage might inform contemporary civic identity and branding—shaping how modern Hong Kong represents itself within China and to the wider world.

Three workshop sessions with a master of ligation arts are available on 14 and 15 November. Each session costs HK$250. Registration is required.
