Founded in 1978, the Department of Art History at the University of Hong Kong (formerly known as the Department of Fine Arts until 2020) provides rigorous art history training that crosses geopolitical, chronological and disciplinary boundaries. The Department offers classes examining arts from diverse cultures at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and encourages intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and bold imagination that go beyond classrooms. Through the Department’s classes, internship opportunities in the cultural field, and classroom experiments with art and technology, students learn how to look, contextualize and question the arts in order to understand how visual forms make tangible the social, political and private aspects of human existence.
