Walk with us to trace the rich history of South Asia in Hong Kong!
The history of Hong Kong is deeply intertwined with the history of South Asia. People from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka have been fundamental in creating the city we live in. Parsi business men from Bombay co-founded the Hong Kong Jockey Club, created the Star Ferry, funded the construction of the University of Hong Kong, and opened the Ruttonjee Hospital. Gurkha soldiers from Nepal protected Hong Kong throughout the 1950s and 1960s. South Asian Muslim sailors started the Lascar Row Settlement in Sheung Wan and built the first mosque in the city, in Mid-Levels. Our beloved milk tea would have been impossible without the high quality Ceylon tea, brought from Sri Lanka.
Along our walking tour, we will trace the history of South Asians in Hong Kong as well as celebrate the vibrant and diverse South Asian communities that continue to thrive across the city. We will taste different South Asian regional cuisines from local restaurants, meet spice and textile importers, and learn about the important religious practices that unite communities in Kowloon. Our walking tour will show how the many different cultures of South Asia have been central in making the city.
