Our Families: Myths, Truths, and Futures

What is an “ideal” family today?

What does a future family look like? The idealised traditional model—a heterosexual, married couple with two children—does not necessarily reflect how most people live today. In reality, families take many forms: single-parent, cross-cultural, multigenerational, queer, child-free, chosen, multispecies, and households shaped by displacement and migration.

Our Families: Myths, Truths, and Futures is a zine-making workshop developed by HKU’s Department of History in collaboration with a group of artists, writers and creatives. Drawing on historical posters by the Family Planning Association of Hong Kong (FPAHK), participants are asked to imagine what family could mean going forward. In an intimate setting inside the urban oasis of Asia Society Hong Kong Center, participants will cut up, remix and reassemble these posters as they share stories about families that aren’t always told or heard. They will also learn to make new zines as a creative response to challenge the conventional narratives of the “ideal” family.

Two workshop sessions are available on 7 and 14 November. Each participant only needs to sign up for one session.

Participants are also encouraged to join our zine printing session on 15 November (more detail will be announced in the workshops), where we will produce a zine anthology with the zines and posters they created in the workshops. Each participant will have a copy of the anthology. We will also have an exhibition of the workshop output in January 2027 at (TBC)Zine.
